What is ChemLab?

ChemLab is a browser-based chemistry reference and calculator. It bundles an interactive periodic table of all 118 elements (data from IUPAC 2021, CIAAW, and NIST), a 3D orbital viewer, an equation balancer, acid-base/pH and buffer tools, a pKa table, IUPAC nomenclature, and crystal-structure models.

How does it work?

Everything runs in your browser with no server. The equation balancer parses formulas, builds an elements-by-compounds matrix, and solves the null space with Gauss-Jordan over exact BigInt fractions. Acid-base tools use Kw = 1.0e-14 at 25 degC and the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation.

When should I use it?

Use ChemLab to look up element properties, balance equations, compute pH for strong/weak acids, bases and salts, design buffers, check pKa values, practice IUPAC naming, or visualize orbital and crystal-lattice geometry. Useful for high-school and undergraduate chemistry study and quick reference.

All 118 elements, from hydrogen (Z=1) to oganesson (Z=118). Each record includes atomic mass, electron configuration, state at STP, density, melting/boiling points, electronegativity, atomic radius, isotopes, and discovery data, sourced from IUPAC 2021, CIAAW, and NIST.

How does ChemLab balance chemical equations?

It parses each formula (supporting nested parentheses and state labels like (s)/(l)/(g)/(aq)), builds a homogeneous linear system of elements by compounds, then solves the null space via Gauss-Jordan over exact BigInt fractions, normalizing to the smallest positive integer coefficients.

What acid-base calculations are supported?

Strong/weak acids and bases, salt hydrolysis, buffer design via Henderson-Hasselbalch, and titration curves for sa-sb, sb-sa, wa-sb, and wb-sa. It assumes aqueous solutions at 25 degC with Kw = 1.0e-14, accurate to roughly 0.1 pH units.

Does ChemLab work offline?

Yes. ChemLab is a fully static, client-side site with no server API. All data and calculators run in the browser, and the build is offline-capable. It supports 5 languages: English, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, and German.

What pKa data is included?

A 119-entry pKa table at 25 degC across inorganic, carboxylic, phenol, amine, amino-acid, and other categories, with polyprotic acids listed in order. Examples: acetic acid (CH3COOH) pKa 4.76, HCl pKa -7.0, H3PO4 pKa 2.15/7.20/12.35.
